St. Mary's Alumni
St. Mary's 50th Anniversary Reunion

On August 15, 16 and 17, 2003, hundreds came together in Sherbrooke to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of St. Mary's Rural High School in 1953. Over 400 former graduates and students, teachers and staff, principals and secretaries, bus drivers, administrators, and many others with an affiliation to education and learning at St. Mary’s came together to celebrate this “green and golden” anniversary.

News & Updates

Friday Night Update

The St. Mary's 50th Anniversary Reunion got off to an excellent start this Friday, August 15, with a Coffee House. The event started early as several alumni signed-in before the event was scheduled to begin at 7pm. Participants signed-in and registered steadily throughout the evening.

Saturday Update

The 2nd Day of the St. Mary's 50th Anniversary Reunion saw perfect weather, an excellent atmosphere, and lots of mingling. Registration began at 10am, and became very busy as the Opening Ceremonies approached. 15 minutes before the Opening Ceremonies were scheduled to begin, the foyer was full. Participants arrived steadily while the ceremony took place.

The Opening Ceremonies began at approximately 1:15pm with a procession of special guests to the sounds of piper Shawn Fraser. Joyce Johnston provided music on piano for O Canada. Included in the ceremonies were speeches from the current Principal of St. Mary's, Walter Duggan, Donald A. Cameron (Principal 1953), Zena MacKinnon (former Home Economics teacher), and Mildred Whidden (teacher). Master of Ceremonies David MacDonald also recognized other alumni from 1953 including Margaret Cameron (teacher), Frank Terris (teacher), and Harvey Burns (bus driver). Warmest regards were also expressed by Warden Milton Jordan, Strait Regional School Board member Hazel Kennedy, and MLA Ronnie Chisholm. Other highlights of the ceremony included a video presentation called "St. Mary's: Long Time Gone" and a special presentation of graduation plaques to the classes of 1974 and 1984. An 'Open Mike' session was held at the end of the program where audience members shared their thoughts of St. Mary's. The general sentiment (from young and old) was that St. Mary's was 'home' and the friendly atmosphere of the school cannot be matched.

Following the Opening Ceremonies, participants visited the old St. Mary's Rural High (now St. Mary's Education Centre), browsed various memorabilia and mingled. With perfect weather for the day's events, participants took advantage by sharing memories and stories outside. The afternoon's activities were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Everyone eagerly awaited Cape Breton band "The Accents" who provided music for the dance.

There was lots of hugging and hand-shaking to be seen. Alumni mingled most of the evening to the sounds of local musicians playing in the cafeteria. The Reunion committee would like to thank the entertainment for providing such an enjoyable atmosphere for the evening.

Participants could also take a look at memorabilia (including school jackets, old photographs, and yearbooks) that was on display. Members of the reunion committee, expecting around 100 people, were excited to see a turn-out of 150+.

Saturday Night Update

The "icing on the cake" took place on Saturday night at the St. Mary's 50th Anniversary Reunion. Cape Breton band "The Accents" blew the roof off the gymnasium. Words can only begin to describe how great the band and the dance were. The music was so wonderful, the dance floor was full for every song.

This was the first appearance "The Accents" had made in the Sherbrooke area. With almost 400 people in attendance, the Reunion dance was one of the largest dances in St. Mary's history.

Sunday Update

The final day of the St. Mary's 50th Anniversary Reunion began with a breakfast brunch at 9:30am. The Ecumentical Church Service began at 11:00am with Father John O. Scott as Master of Ceremonies for the Service. Reverend Roxanne MacGaw (Kaiser), class of '81, delivered a message entitled "Remember...". Sunday's activiites, which were well attended, brought the incredible weekend to a close. Farewells could be seen as alumni departed for home.

Alumni Scholarships

A financial statement of the 50th Anniversary Reunion was published in an issue of the Municipal newsletter. Excess funds from the St. Mary's 50th Anniversary Reunion were put towards an Alumni Scholarship for future graduates of St. Mary's Academy. Over $3000 was contributed.

Donations

The St. Mary's 50th Reunion Committee would like to extend their warmest thanks to those donors whose generosity helped to make the Reunion activities possible. Special thanks to Martha Brown, Ethel MacLaughlin, Helen & Hugh MacDonald, ExxonMobil, Doug Morrison, Kendell Reeves, and John & Gay Weir.
